Meet María Alejandra and Kenia Lucia!

This week we’d like you to meet two sisters: María Alejandra (left) and Kenia Lucia (right). Both girls are new to the Center, and María Alejandra is in 2-year-old pre-school while her sister is with the 3 year olds. The girls both live together with their mother and father.

One of María’s favorite activities is playing house, and her teacher this year mentioned that one of her strengths is being eager to try out all of her class’s activities. One thing she struggles with is following directions. Sounds familiar for a lot of two year olds! María is often described as observant, helpful, and friendly.

Kenia especially loves playing with dolls, and she is known for being affectionate and protective of others. She seems to struggle with apologizing, however. Kenia is often described as a team player, respectful, and helpful.

The girls’ mom and dad, María Isabel and César, are 37 and 36. They finished ninth grade and high-school, respectively, and María is currently a stay-at-home mom while César works as a taxi driver, earning approximately $300 a month. They applied for a scholarship from Programa Velasco because César earns a variable income that is not enough to support both of his daughters with full tuition at the center. María hopes to start her own business and is currently a member of Programa Velasco’s Women’s Empowerment Program. She has started selling fresco and other frozen treats outside of a local university.

If you would like to support children like María Alejandra and Kenia Lucia, find more information here, and be sure to check back next #MeetMeMonday for an introduction to another one of our scholarship students!
