Meet Valeria! She is one of our scholarship students in 2 year old pre-school. That means this is her first year here at the Center. She will be turning 3 on September 6th! She lives with her mom and dad and has one sibling. One of Valeria’s favorite activities is running and jumping, and her teacher this year mentioned that one of her strengths is being able to get along with everyone. One thing she struggles with is following directions. Valeria is often described as helpful and friendly, and she loves to dance!
Valeria’s mom and dad, Sara and Oscar, are 25 and 37. Sara received no formal education and Oscar completed ninth grade. Sara sells fruits and vegetables on the street while Oscar works as a mechanic, earning approximately $360 a month between the two of them. They applied for a scholarship from Programa Velasco because it is difficult to make ends meet and pay full tuition at the Center on their limited, variable income. This year, Sara also joined Programa Velasco’s Women’s Empowerment Project in an effort to improve and grow her business. Despite not knowing how to read or write, she is committed to learning more about how to better administer her business in order to provide her children with the kind of education she never had.
If you would like to support a child like Valeria, find more information here, and be sure to check back next Monday to meet another one of our scholarship students!
